Super Spinning Prize Wheel DIY!

I posted this last year and it was featured at UCreate...
but it is just TOO good to not bring it up again!
Especially this time of year when you might be planning a family reunion or carnival!
A simple craft that will make you a Rockstar!
Any kid (or adult for that matter) that has watched
The Wheel of Fortune has longed to spin that giant prize wheel.

When we went to the fair last summer,
there were booths set up with smaller, but equally
as awesome prize wheels that the kids got to
 spin...once.
Only once?

I vowed to remedy that.

Say hello to the DIY spinner prize wheel!

Supplies:
1 lazy susan (Ikea $8 or Walmart for $12)
1 board slightly larger than the spinner
1 wooden dowel, about 3 inches long
1 plastic zip tie
1" nails
Dry Erase Vinyl ($8)
Paint
Wooden 2" ball
(washi tape optional)

Tools:
drill bit the size of the wooden dowel
E6000 glue
hammer

It's so simple, I promise!

Peel that rubbery plastic ring off the bottom of the spinner...
Note: on my first board, I got a step ahead of
myself and painted before I drilled in the dowel.
So, pace yourself.

Get a drill bit, and a dowel the same size.
Don't drill all the way through the board...insert and glue in dowel.
I used some wood filler to sort of grout it in place.
Then I had to paint again...you'll only have to paint once!
Paint them up any color you like!
I just used a light spray primer and then a coat of color!
Quite a bit of the top gets covered,
so you don't have to be so thorough.
Next:
Dry Erase vinyl surface...I got it at Hobby Lobby
($7.99 without 40% off coupon)

Instead of cutting my vinyl into
triangles that could easily pull up...
I traced the entire lazy susan onto my dry erase vinyl
Cut off an additional 1/2 inch all around the circle
...removed the baking and stuck the whole thing down on top!
Not super perfect, but awesome.
Then, using striped washi tape, I made lined divisions!
Next, some tiny nails (1" long) tapped in between every triangle.
Leave them up high enough to hit the zip tie...

Glob some E6000 all around the back circle of the Lazy Susan where it will rest on the board.
(right where I removed that rubber ring in the beginning)
Press onto your board and allow it to dry.
Be patient and don't try to spin it until it's completely dry.
Trust me on this!
Scrunch a zip tie onto the top of the dowel...cut the zip tie
so it is long enough to hit all the nails as they spin by!
Sand down or cut (I used the band saw) off one surface of your wooden ball
so you can glue it to the center of the spinner.
It gives it a finished look and kids love to hold onto it to spin!
For my first one,  I used the silhouette to cut triangles.
But the vinyl triangles peel up easily at the points.  FYI.
I've used mine more than a year and haven't replaced the
vinyl yet...but probably will this summer!
And it was super hard to make them even!
Whatever you make yours like,
It will be a hit!
Use if for an activity wheel for summer!
Maybe the *best* child of the week gets to
spin it to see what the Saturday activity will be!

Use a dry erase marker to write your
hearts desires onto the triangles!

Fun ideas:
Chores
Things to do/places to go this summer
30 second activities (run, jump, crawl...)
Church lessons
Birthday party games
Carnivals or Fundraiser prizes!
Every event that I've taken this wheel,
I've gotten multiple orders!

My kids love to play with it!
I think they each spun the wheel 100 times---and
did lots of jumping jacks, push-ups and
 army crawls without complaint!
Erases easily.  I wipe with a lightly windex spritzed paper towel.
Wipe from the center to the edge.  Sometimes the
thin plastic sheet on the top of the vinyl starts to peel...
no problems so far, but they will be easy to
replace when they are too worn.
Ultimate Prize wheel!
Don't you want to rush to the store to
 gather supplies right now???
In closing, if you make this,
you will be the envy of your friends...
You'll get high 5's wherever you go...
the coolest to your kids...
they will actually want to hang out with you...
cuz you're a totally awesome rockstar!

Phonetic Alphabet Freedom Distressed Sign!

Phonetic Alphabet Freedom Distressed Sign!

Something about the phonetic alphabet is so patriotic to me!
What better than making it into some holiday decor?
I started with a beat up board that was buried in the garage hoard.

Painted it blue, dry brush technique.
So you basically feel like you don't have enough paint on your brush...
makes it easier to distress it later!
Sanded it down a bit when it was dry.

Cut some letters out of vinyl...
I only had a tiny bit of white left...so I got creative fitting the letters on there.
(weeded them off, and used transfer tape then cut them apart)

laid them out...
Hmmm, an extra "me" for some reason...
So I stuck it to MY water bottle...
And then cut out a FREEDOM, all in caps.

Laid them out same as the other letters...

Applied them to the wood...

Perfect Patriotic decor!  :)
